Saint Martin Loterie Farm: Eco Bore to Eco Excitement
April 13, 2008

Located in the foothills of Pic Paradis (Paradise Peak) is a truly unique place called the Loterie Farm. Between 1721 and 1848 it was known as Loterie Sugar Plantation and original slave walls still surround the property that once housed 300 slaves.
After Hurricane Luis in 1995, BJ Welch took over the property and has since dedicated his life to this eco wonder. When BJ embarked on this project, he didn’t know the name of a single flower or plant although he’d been living on St. Maarten/Saint Martin for many years years. But quiz him today and you’ll find that he’s made eco his business.
These days, Loterie Farm is a private Nature Preserve welcoming the public to Hike its wonderful Nature Trails that lead to the top of Pic Paradis, the highest point on the island. Another unique feature is “walks through the treetops”. Cable systems set up throughout the farm allow you to walk and even glide through the canopy — an amazing and invigorating experience for practically all ages. Don’t take our word for it, watch the video below.
Dining at Loterie Farm is a an experience in itself. The Hidden Forest Restaurant, serving lunch and dinner, is served under a covered terrace overlooking the lush tropical gardens and towering mango trees. It’s truly one of the most exciting places to dine in the Caribbean thanks to its creative chef Julia Purkis (former Kanga Café chef) and her fine cuisine presented with tropical flare, made as delectable as it is delicious.
Note: Unlike many other “tourist attractions” that are driven by advertising, the Hidden Forest owes its success by “word of mouth” alone and that’s quite an accomplishment, particularly for a restaurant so far off the “beaten path”.

And another neat thing about Loterie Farm is its Tapas Bar - built on an elevated terrace with great music, decor and ambiance. It’s a fantastic socializing magnet perfect for happy hour and after dinner drinks.
