Carnival Update!!!

April 23, 2008

Here is a recent update of Carnival 2008. After a few days of events, I will try to keep you posted on the happenings.

As you all know, Carnival in St. Maarten is off to a good start. The gates of the Festival Village were opened officially on Thursday, April 17 as revelers and local bands took to the streets. On Friday, April 18 was the first local show for the carnival season entitled King of Kings, where past Calypso kings took to the stage to see who was the REAL king of carnival. King Beau Beau emerged the winner in this contest.

Saturday, April 19 saw the first international show in the village. Featured US artist R&B sensation Keyshia Cole graced the stage with her performance for the people of St. Maarten. Though many claimed her performance was too short, the professionalism of the show and her performance was well applauded. She shared the stage with WCK out of Dominica and Destra Garcia and Ziggy Ranking both hailing from Trinidad.

Junior Carnival ParadeOn Sunday, April 20 the youth of St. Maarten came out in force displaying their beautiful costumes for the Junior Carnival Parade. On Monday, April 21 the second local show was held in the Festival Village. The Calypso Elimination Competition saw 14 calypsonians vying for the crown. Only ten would make it into the finals which is scheduled for April 27.

Keep on reading for more updates coming soon.
