Baggage pileup at airport again
May 5, 2008

Once again, passengers and airlines at the Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) were met with an offline security scanner on Saturday. This resulted in irate passengers, a pile of baggage and airplanes waiting to take off. The security scanner was offline for about four hours.
Airport officials had to wait at least 90 minutes for a back-up scanner to be installed instead of quickly transferring to the employee’s security screener to alleviate the workload. Some airlines left the airport without bags just so they could remain on schedule.
Jet Blue, Delta Airlines and flights to Paris via Air France were all affected by the malfunction and had to foot the baggage bill for the luggage that had to be brought in on other flights. The conveyor belt also had malfunctioned the day before, causing a yet another pileup. Baggage was moved by hand until the belt was repaired a short while later.
