Blacklisted for being a tax haven
May 6, 2008
Several countries in Europe have blacklisted the Netherlands Antilles because they consider it to be a tax haven. European Union members like Portugal, Poland, Greece and Italy took this remarkable step. It is rather astonishing that countries with a world reputation in the field of corruption like Greece and Italy take the fight against tax evasion to a foreign country while they would do better cleaning up their own house first.
Italy is the home of the mafia, a system that has corrupted politics and society to such an extent that the country has been practically ungovernable for the past sixty-odd years.
Greece is another fine example of a failed dmocracy. Never mind its great history - that is all there is left. Decades of power in the hands of a corrupt socialist party have paralyzed Greek bureaucracy. The Greek civil service is rife with employees who have a desk and a paycheck but who have no clue about the work they are supposed to do.
Netherlands Antilles State Secretary of Finance, Alex Rosaria is baffled by the move that he calls “inaccurate and a totally misguided labeling of our country.”
The Angilles may not have an excellent track record in the financial household-department itself but it does not deserve to be branded by countries with an equally dubious history for something that is not.
