Happy Hour Listing May 29-Jun 04
May 29, 2008

The term Happy Hour originated in the United States Navy. In the 1920s, “happy hour” was slang for on-ship performances. “Happy” in this context meant slightly drunk.
The idea of drinking before dinner has its roots in the Prohibition era. When the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act were passed banning alcohol consumption, citizens would host “cocktail hours” or “happy hours” at a speakeasy — underground drinking establishments — before eating at restaurants where alcohol could not be served. Cocktail lounges continued the trend of drinking before dinner. “Happy hour” entered civilian use around 1960, especially after a Saturday Evening Post article in 1959.

Strictly speaking, happy hour, although not known under this term, exist much longer in the French and German culture, where the “Apo” or Aperitif are terminologies that date back to the 14th century. Even earlier chronicles in the Bourgogne (France) put the date somewhere in the 12th century where monks would receive a daily ration of red wine around 3 pm after their long day of work in the vineyards.
Most vineyards in that time where owned and maintained by monasteries and many world famous names in the Bourgogne today still refer to the “old days of cloister activities” with Clos Vougeot leading the pack and the higher up areas of this sloping vineyard producing “Grand Cru’s” (Great Growths) that are counted amongst the finest red wines in the world.
