$5,000 for ‘Follow Me’

June 23, 2008

The winner of the 11th St. Martin Billfish Tournament on Sunday went to François Anton’s Follow Me, granting him $5000 first prize in the competition. In second place overall was Big Ting, a boat from Virgin Gorda, collecting $2,500 in the process. Third place with a cash prize of $1,500 went to Game On, a boat hailing from Florida. Game On however caught the biggest fish in the tournament, a 655lb marlin that impressed the crowd. Though the catch was not a record breaker, they did receive $5000 to add to their third place winnings.

“We caught the big one at about 2:45pm, and it took an hour and 45 minutes to get into the boat,” said Captain Cujo of the Game On boat. “The waves were 6-10 ft during the morning, so it was rough. But the sea conditions improved later in the afternoon. This is the second biggest marlin we have ever caught. The other one weighed in at 696lbs in another tournament.”

In total for the whole competition, there were 10 marlins weighed on the scales, including the first day’s catch that did not qualify.

Soremar’s “$70,000 Porsche for a BillFish (see related article)” did not make it to the “podium” since the previous record was not broken.
