It rains resignations again on St. Maarten
July 3, 2008
Just two weeks after the resignations of boardmembers Claudius Buncamper and Joe Richardson, Rudy Hoeve as well as Kelvin Bleyden handed in their resignation from the Telem Board of Directors. The situation around the resignation of the Commissioner responsible for Telecommunications, Maria Buncamper Molanus remains vague, since protocol requires that a newly appointed Commissioner needs to be installed during the first available meeting of the Island Council. Since her resignation, two scheduled Island Council meetings have taken place, without any indication whether she remains Commissioner or not. Notably, the first Island Council meeting was postponed due to a no-show of all ruling DP party Commissioners and the DP Councilmen.
In another surprise, former Commissioner of Telecommunications, Mr. Franklin Meyers has tendered his resignation from the Democratic Party after 13 years of party membership, of which 8 he served as Commissioner of Health and Telecommunications. Insinuations of irregularities within the Telem group of companies during his tenure were made by Buncamper-Molanus which according to Meyers gives reason for his resignation stating “the Buncampers are a constant thorn”.
The opposition parties have posed some 200 questions to the ruling party last Monday pertaining the “inner workings” of the Telem Group of Companies as well as clarification on the pending court case initiated by The Merritt Group in which it claims 2.5 million dollars in expenses for the work involved in the negotiation of an approved $78 million dollar loan with CITI Bank Corp., which the government owned company Telem, rejected in October 2007.
Yet another coincidence is that Smitcoms’ (Telem’s international carrier) director Curtis Haynes resigned per October 1, 2007, while, as learned from reliable sources, the former Commissioner of Telecommunications Franklin Meyer was still sideways involved in pursuing the deal with the Merritt Group.
This saga has not seen the end as reportedly Dutch State Secretary of Kingdom Relations Ank Bijleveld Schouten wants to meet with Leader of Government on the “worrisome situation around Commissioner Buncamper Molanus”.
