Monitoring Large disturbance off the coast of Africa

July 3, 2008

In the eastern Atlantic, a well defined low pressure center is located about 270 miles southeast of the Cape Verde Islands and is swirling toward the west with flare ups of thunderstorms near the center.

Environmental conditions appear favorable for slow development of this disturbance, and it could become a tropical depression within the next day or two as it continues westward. This area will be monitored very closely.

As of 3 am this morning the start of a counter clockwise rotation has developed and the flair up of thunderstorms right inside the center suggest that a depression within the next 24 hrs is likely.

Development in this area is rare, but not unprecedented, at this time of year. Look back in history to 1996 and you can see a storm that formed near this area called Bertha.

Bertha became the first hurricane for St. Maarten after the devastating hurricane Luis on September 5, 1995 to hit St. Maarten as a minimal Hurricane Cat. 1. Strangely ripping off roofs that survived Cat. 4 Hurricane Luis the year before.

Another area of thunderstorms will move through the windward islands, Guadeloupe, and possibly St. Kitts overnight into the early morning with some gusty winds and heavy rain.
