St. Kitts to Host Soca Awards

Basseterre, St. Kitts – On Saturday night, October 18, 2008, St. Kitts  will host the 6th Annual International Soca Awards (iSA), marking the first time that such an event will be held on the island.  The Awards event will feature performances by top Soca artists and will conclude an exciting ‘Soca Weekend’ on St. Kitts.“We are pleased to host this prestigious event,” said Senator Ricky Skerritt, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports & Culture.  “As a compliment to the strong emphasis onCaribbean musical styles and artistes who have performed at the St. Kitts Music Festival, held annually in June over the years, this is further evidence that St Kitts is committed to supporting local and Caribbean musicians who have pursued excellence.  We hope that regional Soca fans will join us in support for iSA2008 during our St. Kitts Soca Weekend in October.”

Among the Soca musicians scheduled to perform at iSA2008 are such top acts as the Respeck Band out of St. Martin, Montserrat’s Jadine, Tizzy and El-A-kru from Antigua, and St. Kitts’ very own Nu Vybes International and Small Axe Band, to name just a few.  Events leading up to the highly anticipated Awards show will begin on Thursday, October 16 with Total Local Soca Night featuring a Soca Monarch competition.  On Friday, the Fashion Show and White Out Party will take place and on Saturday night, the Awards presentation will culminate the ‘Soca Weekend’ activities and include a Red Carpet entrance, VIP reception, the Awards show and an after-party. 

Hosts for the Awards will be Canadian actress, comedienne and radio personality Suzanne “Zan” Coy along with St. Kitts’ St. Clair “G Cue” Liburd.   The Awards are a presentation of Brooklyn-based Soca Awards Organization, Inc. founded by Trinidadian Colin Jackman with the purpose of recognizing the artistry of Soca music.  The Awards will be held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort’s event center.
