August 26, 2008 — Tropical Storm Gustav, packing wind gusts of 60 mph, formed in the central Caribbean today and was heading for the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
The storm is expected to move near or over southwestern Haiti on Tuesday, according to the National Hurricane Center. Hurricane warnings have been posted by both countries, which bore the brunt of Tropical Storm Fay in the Caribbean last week. Fay killed 23 people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, according to published reports.
Gustav is the seventh named storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season.
Meanwhile, Fay has been downgraded to a tropical depression and continues to linger over the southeastern U.S. with rainfall amounts ranging from 5 to 20 inches, depending on locale.
Fay made history with four separate landfalls in Florida in the space of a week. The storm caused seven deaths and millions of dollars in damage in the U.S.
Meanwhile, tropical storm warnings and watches remained in effect for the eastern coast of the Baja Peninsula and parts of Mainland Mexico as Tropical Storm Julio continued on a path to the east of Loreto, Mexico, in the Gulf of California.
