Antilles PM wants Dutch databank scrapped

September 11, 2008

Prime Minister Emily de Jongh-Elhage of the Netherlands Antilles says she is disappointed that the Dutch government is going ahead with a databank on problem Antillean youths. The databank was the idea of former immigration minister Rita Verdonk, and has recently been ruled legal by the Council of State, the highest government advisory body.

It will contain information about young migrants from the Antilles who have a record of trouble with the Dutch police. The Netherlands Antilles is a former Dutch colonial territory which now forms an autonomous part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Ms De Jongh-Elhage has written to Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, saying that the whole Antillean population feels stigmatised by the move. She argues the issue of problem youths should be tackled without distinctions being made on grounds of race or ethnicity. She says it is still not too late for the Dutch government to scrap the plan.
