Fugitive on FBI 10 Most Wanted List is waiting U.S. extradition

September 12, 2008

Michael Jason Registe is wanted for his alleged participation in a double homicide in Columbus, Georgia. On July 20, 2007, Law enforcement officials responded to a shooting incident in which two males sitting inside a truck had suffered execution-style gunshot wounds to the back of their heads. One of the victims died at the scene and the other died shortly afterward.

The FBI posted a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading directly to his arrest. Registe was apprehended by St. Maarten Police officials in conjunction with the Antilles Director of Public Prosecution and through coordination with the FBI’s Legal Attaché, Bridgetown, Barbados. Numerous tips had been received by the FBI after the airing of an America’s Most Wanted television segment featuring the fugitive. That ultimately led local St. Maarten authorities to the Belvedere section of Dutch St. Maarten where Registe was arrested on August 27, 2008, while at a guest house. SWAT entry was made and Registe was taken into custody without further incident.

Michael Jason Registe now awaits extradition as the paperwork is in process.  Chief Public Prosecutor, Taco Stein said that according to the law governing extradition, before the American authorities can transfer any documents, they must be translated into Dutch and St. Maarten in turn must translate theirs in English.  Stein says that once the paperwork is completed, a court date is required for a judge to rule on the extradition. In the meantime, Registe is being held in lockdown at the Pointe Blanche Prison.

The public is reminded that all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
