Repairs to the Simpson Bay Bridge began on July 28th. While most of the structural deficencies carried out by Canadian Central Welding and Iron Works have been repaired the works will continue through the 2nd week of September. Read more »

We are in for a rocky weather ride today. TS Hanna’s tail is going to smack us right in the face over the next 12-15 hrs (unless it retracts its “tail”). Hanna is forecasted to become a hurricane over the next day or so while it is moving away to the northwest at 7 miles. TS Gustav is battering Jamaica and is expected to move back over open waters and also intensify again to hurricane status today.

The ultra-modern cruise facilities at the Port of St. Maarten puts St. Maarten in the ninth place among the top twenty world cruise ports and destinations, according to G.P. Wild International, a management, marketing and economic consultancy practice based in the United Kingdom.
Harbor Point Village, where cruise ship passengers can disembark was opened in May 2003, is made up of 12 shops and 12 market-stalls.
Passengers who wish to browse Philipsburg, duty-free shopping mecca of the Northeastern Caribbean, can take a water taxi to the Captain Hodge Wharf. While those who rather tour the island or visit one of the island’s other attractions, taxis are on standby.

Raspberry, Mint & Hazelnut Daiquiri
The name Daiquirí is also the name of a beach near Santiago, Cuba, and an iron mine in that area, and it is a word of Taíno origin.The cocktail was invented about 1905 in a bar named Venus in Santiago, about 23 miles east of the mine, by a group of American mining engineers. Although stories persist that that Cox, one of the engineers present, invented the drink when he ran out of gin while entertaining American guests the drink evolved naturally due to the prevalence of lime and sugar. Tiramisu Affogato
There is some debate regarding tiramisu’s origin, as there is no documented mention of the dessert before 1983. In 1998, Fernando and Tina Raris similarly claimed that the dessert is a recent invention. They point out that while the recipes and histories of other layered desserts are very similar, the first documented mention of tiramisu in a published work appears in a Greek cookbook. Backing up this story, the authors recalled an article that tiramisu was created in 1971 in Treviso. Read more »
