PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST:
J. G. DOMINIQUE is a journalist and broadcaster by profession with not only a passion for words, but also for the visual media.
A keen follower of the classical Masters including Carravaggio, Titian, Velasquez, Reubens and also of the French Impressionists, Dominique is a firm believer in the classic and fundamental techniques of art which requires first and foremost a firm mastery of drawing skills.
His style varies from charcoal drawings to paintings in watercolour, pastels, acrylics and oils, often combining varied techniques as mixed media constructions.
Living and working on St. Maarten, Dominique has taken inspiration from the works of the foremost African-American collagist Romare Bearden. He expresses himself both figuratively and in abstract forms, very often juxtaposing the two in what he has been calling magical realism.
Where Romare Bearden effectively used paper cutouts, inks and dyes, J.G. Dominique creates his images using pieces of fabric which he painstakingly collects from many tailors shops and material stores around the island.
In a St. Maarten society where there is much concern about poor recycling practices and where there has always been enormous waste, there are strong symbolic messages conveyed in Dominique’s works through the frayed scraps of fabric that represent not only the recycling of material but also the very essence of the recycling of the St. Maarten we now know.
Note: Artist, Joe Dominique became a mentor under the Nanette Bearden Fine Arts Gallery Mentoring Program in October, 2002, helping to encourage aspiring artists on St. Maarten to not only enjoy the process of making art, but also to appreciate and understand their surroundings and to interpret these images in their own personal way.
