PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST:
Maximiliaan Phelipa is a St. Maarten artist whose passion for life and art are vividly seen in his colorful canvases. Although painting sensitive family scenes and portraits in pastel has been his forte, the welcome addition of colorful tropical flowers and birds in oil and acrylic enables him to capture the true effects of color in sunlight and shade.
He intensifies the mood and subject in his work and challenges viewers to look closer at colors seen versus what is perceived. Maximiliaan studied and learned form the works of old masters and modern leading artists and can be found in a number of studios and galleries when traveling abroad.
Between 1988 and 2003, Maximiliaan had eight very successful solo exhibitions and three (3) group exhibitions.
In November 1992, Maximiliaan had the distinguished honor to present, on behalf St. Maarten artists, one of his water color paintings entitled “Chattering Parrots” to Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands.
The tropical weather, white sand beaches and pristine Caribbean waters heightens the emotional charge and sensual depth in Maximiliaan’s work. “I can feel the energy surrounding me, it carries me into the next step, the one where I feel closer to my subjects” says the artist. “People should see something dynamic and vibrant in my paintings; they should uplift someone’s heart with the beauty of light and dark, the beauty of form and vibrant colors”.
His solo exhibitions “Celebrating Life” (2001) and “Dual Vision of a Gemini” (2003) were a near sell out with 75% of his paintings sold on opening nights reaching an attendance of over 350 people at each exhibition.
In July 2002, Maximiliaan’s work was on view at the Festival Arte Del Caribe in Cuba and in September 2003, his work was part of a major group exhibition in Washington D.C. as part of a tribute paid to the late African-American painter Romare Bearden.
Maximiliaan lives, works and continues to follow his artist inspiration here at home on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten.
