International by air
The island is unquestionably the hub for the Northeastern Caribbean. With major airlines flying in daily direct from major U.S. East coast hubs, Amsterdam and Paris, South America and many of the Caribbean Islands, Princess Juliana International Airport was recently rebuilt into a 120 million dollar facility now equipped to handle every potential growth for the next quarter century.
The Grand Case airport on the French side services inter-island connections mainly to St. Barths, Guadeloupe and Martinique.
International by ocean
The new Dr. Wathey Cruise Ship facility in the Dutch side capital of Philipsburg can accommodate 6 mega cruise ships at one time, allowing all major cruise lines daily docking facilities for their cruise passengers. Marigot on the French side has pier facilities for cargo freighters and is serviced directly from Puerto Rico and the French overseas territories.
Inter island transportation
Air connections to all the surrounding islands and many of the Caribbean islands are provided by American Eagle, Carib Air, LIAT, Air St. Barths, BWIA, St. Maarten’s Winair, and many more on daily schedules.
By sea there are Ferry connections to St. Barths, Anguilla and Saba.
On Island Transportation
Is provided by a large number of car rental companies, offering everything from SUV and Jeeps to 4-Wheelers, Hybrids, Smart cars and Scooters. You can even rent a motorcycle from the local Harley Davidson dealer.
Other popular ways to get around the island are taxis, tour buses and public transportation. Several Limousine services are also available.
Fair advice: stay off bicycles, (unless on resort grounds) and be very careful on the scooters; traffic, especially in rush hour can be very challenging.
Road Conditions
The Island’s roads are typically small with the occasional pothole, curves and sometimes hilly climbs and descents. Traveling at night into the “country side” can be challenging because not all roads have streetlights. Good thing is that contary to many of the surrounding (British and Danish heritage) islands, people drive on the right side of the road on the friendly island. Gas stations are spread all over the island and gasoline prices are currently (Jan 2008) well above $4 per gallon, but then again, we don’t charge you for a temporary license like many other islands. Just carry a valid license and you’re okay.
Car rentals abundent at very affordable rates and incentives. Also St. Maarten and Saint Martin has a fairly good and inexpensive public transportation and taxi system. You can even rent a "hog" (Harley Davidson). Scooters and other recreational vehicles such as Quads are for rent at many places.
