PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST:
I started my career as a painter by first working with Romare Bearden, well known for his collage. I did collage for several years and then went on to more painterly work. Now I do a little of both. Before painting, I spent 20 years as an actress in New York City, appearing on Broadway, television soap operas, and radio shows. In 1972, I moved to St. Maarten in the Dutch Caribbean, and then to the small, picturesque island of Saba in 1991.
In his book, “Art Spirit”, Robert Henri says artists love their work regardless of the quality because they don’t see the painting, they see the marks they made when in a heightened state of creativity. I would like to paint in such a heightened state so that my “marks” would be so potent, so telling, that not only when I look at them would I see such creativity, but anyone looking at them would! I think that’s the most wonderful thing I could do for anyone, put him/her in touch with his/her own creative energy! Creativity comes from the subconscious, and while most of my work is intuitive, it’s a conversation between me and the painting. When there’s nothing more to say, my painting is complete.
