Born: Lucia Trifan. April 23, 1949. Tifesti, Romania.

Living in St. Martin, French West Indies since 1984.

EDUCATION: 1976-1979 Romania Fine Arts Brasov, majored in Ceramics and Sculpture.

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST:
In the early 1980’s, avid for new encounters of nature and especially of freedom, Lucia leaves her native Romania to sail around the world. The expedition makes a port of call in the Caribbean on the island of St. Martin. She lives in a small house nestled between France and Holland (St. Martin and St. Maarten) from where she draws her inspiration. She evokes African art through naivety, its richness, luminosity and intensity of its pigmentation.

Sensitive to distress as to the beauty of humanity and the world, Lucia creates her very personal works marked bylight, colors and for some, a certain painful obscurity. Influenced by Chagall and Miro, she feeds her own style easily identifiable and enriches it by her attraction for “the people of the sun” which is very apparent in her canvases. Her work reveals a subtle harmony made of freedom and love, which is incarnated in her figures that seem to be alive.

Lucia’s paintings not only display the richness of the island’s animals and vegetation but also the joy and well being inspired by dancers, the marketplace and the small moments of daily life.
